Cases

Combining futures thinking with design thinking's actionable measures is what I call 'actionable futures'. Actionable futures are about acting in a manner that will serve future generations. It involves introducing novel ideas and approaches that challenge conventional thinking and attempt to redefine industry standards. Instead of incremental improvements, radical innovation seeks to revolutionize the status quo, leading to profound and lasting impacts.

HEALTH & QUALITY OF LIFE

A Vision for Nordic  Women's Health 2040

CHALLENGE: Women in the Nordic region, as elsewhere, live longer but spend significantly more years in poor health than men; globally, women spend about 25% more of their lives in poor health than men. Yet only around 5% of global health R&D funding is dedicated to women's health, and just 1% to non‑oncology women‑specific conditions.

APPROACH:
This initiative has co-created a shared vision for Nordic women's health in 2040. On September 8th, 2025, over 130 women's health experts and women with lived experiences from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland came together at the Danish Parliament. The resulting document goes beyond aspiration, outlining a concrete framework to drive systemic change.

SOLUTION: The Nordic Charter for Women's Health 2040 was launched Dec. 8 2025 as a strategic framework designed to transform women's health from a niche concern into a cornerstone of Nordic social and economic resilience. This Charter embodies the collective insight, ambition, and commitment to shaping a Nordic future where women's health is systemic, equitable, and inclusive.

NORDIC HEALTH 2030

CHALLENGE:
With healthcare costs rising to unprecedented levels, there was a pressing need to shift from reactive treatment to proactive, preventive health solutions—improving both cost efficiency and quality of care across the Nordic region.

APPROACH:
In 2019, I co-facilitated a strategic initiative that brought together over 30 leading decision-makers from across the Nordics. Through a series of collaborative workshops, we identified shared challenges, aligned on Nordic values, and established a framework for a network-driven approach to preventive healthcare.

OUTCOME:
The initiative resulted in a unified vision for Nordic healthcare in 2030, anchored in shared values and a commitment to systemic transformation. This collaborative movement laid the foundation for policy shifts, cross-sector partnerships, and innovation in preventive health strategies across the region.

A GOOD LIFE IN THE 3RD AGE

CLIENT: PFA PENSION, DENMARK

CHALLENGE:
Enable seniors to actively shape their transition from working life to retirement, flattening the curve between these life phases and encouraging continued contribution to society after retirement.

APPROACH:
Co-facilitated the establishment of a dedicated think tank focused on how to smooth the transition from work to retirement. This strategic foresight initiative combined trend analysis and future scenario planning to explore Denmark's societal and healthcare landscape toward 2040. The process involved multi-stakeholder engagement, fostering collaboration among policymakers, industry leaders, and advocacy groups.

OUTCOME:
The think tank delivered 33 policy recommendations to enhance senior well-being, presented in the Danish Parliament and widely covered in national media. Its insights helped shape the public conversation on healthy aging, preventive healthcare, and social inclusion — and continue to influence policy discussions today.

TECHNOLOGY & DATA

STRATEGIC FORESIGHT PLATFORM FOR EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

Client: Confidential, Energy Sector, Norway

CHALLENGE:

A leading oil and gas company wanted to anticipate technological disruptions and identify emerging innovations with the potential to transform its operations, sustainability profile, and competitive position.

APPROACH:
As part of the CIFS advisory team, I helped design and implement a strategic foresight platform for tracking and assessing emerging technologies. The work included trend scanning, impact mapping, and scenario-based prioritization, enabling the company to link long-term innovation signals to short-term strategic decisions.

OUTCOME:
The platform provided a structured and repeatable foresight process, helping leadership identify high-potential technologies and guide R&D investments. It became a strategic tool for innovation planning, supporting the company's transition toward more sustainable and future-ready energy solutions.

ENVISIONING VIRTUAL OPERATIONS CENTRE

Client: Confidential, energy sector, Norway

CHALLENGE:
To relocate offshore personnel to onshore operations — both to reduce costs and as part of the client's sustainability strategy to lower CO₂ emissions from operations. To achieve this without compromising the close collaboration between onshore and offshore teams, a Virtual Operations Centre needed to be designed.

APPROACH:
Using a design thinking approach with a user-centric starting point, we conducted interviews with users across drilling and well operations. Together with the client, my team co-created a shared vision for a Virtual Operations Centre that connects personnel across departments. The process was highly visual, incorporating operational details, staffing needs, technological requirements, and data transfer considerations to ensure a realistic and implementable outcome.

OUTCOME:
A clearly visualised concept showing how to seamlessly connect personnel during the execution phase of drilling operations, bridging onshore and offshore collaboration. The Virtual Operations Centre is now being physically built and will play a key role in helping the company reduce its CO₂ emissions.

SUPPLY CHAIN

A VISION OF THE PORT OF ESBJERG

Client: Climate Partnership, Port of Esbjerg, Denmark

CHALLENGE:

Esbjerg Port aimed to strengthen collaboration across sectors, including energy, logistics, and manufacturing, to create a resource-connected ecosystem that supports Denmark's green transition. The challenge was to translate this complex, cross-sector ambition into a clear and visual shared vision that could align stakeholders and attract future investment.

APPROACH:
In close collaboration with local stakeholders, I facilitated a co-creative design process to visualise how industries at Esbjerg Port could connect through shared infrastructure, circular resource flows, and digital integration. Using systems mapping and design thinking, we created a visual narrative illustrating the ecosystem's potential impact on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and innovation.

OUTCOME:
The result was a strategic visualisation and concept narrative that made the vision tangible for partners, investors, and policymakers. It became a communication and alignment tool for future planning and investment, helping position Esbjerg Port as a key hub for Denmark's sustainable industrial transformation.

MAKING DATA SCIENCE VISIBLE ACROSS SUPPLY CHAIN

Client: Confidential, energy sector, Norway

CHALLENGE:

In a large oil production company, data scientists played a key role in making operations smarter and greener, yet their value often went unnoticed. Their contributions to optimizing the supply chain needed to be made visible to ensure stronger recognition and continued investment from management.

APPROACH:
Using a service design approach, we mapped the flow of data and communication across the supply chain, from offshore rigs requesting spare parts to onshore teams managing logistics and maintenance. To build alignment within the data science team, we applied a storytelling approach that clarified their shared purpose and the tangible impact of their work.

OUTCOME:
The result was an interactive digital overview illustrating how data scientists create value throughout the supply chain, from predictive maintenance to emission reduction. Beyond the deliverable itself, the process helped the team shift mindset: from being reactive troubleshooters to proactive enablers of sustainability and efficiency.

THE FUTURE OF FOOD

FUTURE SCENARIOS FOR FOOD & DRINK 2040

Client: Bord Bia, Ireland

CHALLENGE:
To strengthen Ireland's position as a global leader in food and drink exports, the Irish food industry, from large producers to smallholder farmers, needed a shared vision for the future. The challenge was to align diverse stakeholders around common long-term priorities and identify opportunities for growth in a rapidly changing global market.

APPROACH:
In collaboration with Futavista, a team of advisors from the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies led the development of future scenarios for the Irish food and drink industry in 2040. Through a series of participatory workshops, public and private stakeholders co-created a set of plausible futures that explored trends in sustainability, consumer behavior, technology, and global trade.
